Hide and Seek Thymio (Wireless Distance Detection with Multiple Robots)

Hide and Seek Thymio Lesson Key Concepts

Play a wireless hide-and-seek game with Thymio and explore how robots can communicate and detect distance using sound! This lesson focuses on multi-robot interaction, communication, and creative problem-solving:

  • Use multiple Thymio robots to create a hide-and-seek game.
  • Send and receive signals using the speaker and microphone.
  • Estimate distance based on sound volume (a simple form of echolocation).
  • Advanced: Modify the program to change color thresholds or sound behavior.
  • Advanced: Explore the text-based code to customize robot interactions.

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Connect two Thymio robots using wireless communication.
  2. Use sound signals to estimate distance between robots.
  3. Create a hide-and-seek style interaction with movement and color changes.
  4. Build a simple course using boxes or obstacles for gameplay.

By the end of this lesson, students will understand how robots can communicate and estimate distance using sound.

Important Notes:

This lesson includes one main PDF, but many extensions such as building origami boxes, designing a hide-and-seek course, and exploring different parts of the program.

Tips for this Lesson:

  1. Test the sound detection in a quiet environment for better results.
  2. Adjust volume and distance to see how the robot reacts.
  3. Start simple, then add obstacles or hiding spots.
  4. Experiment with program changes to create new behaviors.

Products/Materials

The following products and resources can be used in this lesson:

Thymio II Robot (x2)
Wireless Dongle
5-Device Remote
Thymio Suite / Aseba
Paper (for boxes or obstacles)

FUN FACT!

Did you know that animals like bats and dolphins use sound to communicate and calculate distance? This process, called echolocation, helps them navigate and find objects, just like your Thymio robots in this lesson!
